The Noble Houses costume

From Breaking Worlds

The nobility value demonstrations of inherited wealth and status, and it shows. Clothes are brightly coloured, often decorated with fancy or metallic trim, and tend to use more fabric than strictly necessary - think big sleeves and swooshy skirts. Jewellery, especially with large gemstones, is very common, as are silk scarves, embroidery and very fine hats. We are going for ‘showy and ostentatious’ here rather than ‘kender’ so are aiming for some degree of taste.

Fay often like to wear clothes that accentuate and co-ordinate with their markings - for instance a Fire-touched character might choose to wear a red robe with a row of triangles embroidered, sewn or painted around the bottom for decoration.

Retainers, servants and functionaries of noble houses will also tend to be dressed well and brightly. Their noble employers want them to make the House look good and will often provide gifts of clothes and accessories to their underlings. Don’t feel the need to look like a stereotypical peasant, but of course, it wouldn’t do to be better dressed than your liege…

Overall, conspicuous consumption is the word, and thanks to modern machines and costume jewellery from (e.g.) Primark, players can achieve the look without having to be as rich as their characters!
